Day 3: day 2 biking

94 km
1442 m ascent
Top speed: 44.4 km

Perry was the Tacoma driver today and the rest of us took off this morning with steady up up up up. Then some meandering hills and then we started with our bear encounters.

Coming into a hollow there was a black bear that was crossing back-and-forth on the road. Farid almost cycled in! We stopped and Rob used his bear banger and we all grouped together and went slowly through the section so as not to spook the bear.

On one of the long downhill Suneet was in the lead and a large black bear almost tackled her as it came flying off the verge and went tearing across the road within inches of her front tire!! OMG. I was right behind her and saw the whole thing. Slammed on my brakes and screamed out ‘Hey bear’ and Suneet just kept peddling, no harm no foul, let’s just keep riding or as we like to say JRA, which is all the things that happened to you when you’re ‘just riding along’.

We rolled into camp, stunning at the side of a lake, tall cedars, fire pit, warm tea with a plan for soup and meatballs tonight.

A serene river flows between dense green forests, with a pebbly shore and distant mountains under a cloudy sky.
